09-02-02-01 Intravenous potassium

Potassium infusion notes

  • Do not exceed an infusion rate of 20mmol/hour (40mmol/hour with ECG monitoring)
  • Maximum concentration through peripheral vein is 40mmol/L (up to 80mmol/L only after discussion with senior medical staff)
  • Always use ready prepared solutions wherever possible
  • Higher concentrations may be given via central lines in authorised areas
  • Refer to Trust potassium policies

      • RPH:

        • Potassium Chloride 0.15% (20mmol) and Glucose 5% 1litre

        • Potassium Chloride 0.3% (40mmol) and Glucose 5% 1litre

      • Although not legally a controlled drug hospitals treat this as a controlled drug regarding ordering and storage.
